Bergerac

Ryan, based at Hambleton in Yorkshire, has done something clever with Bergerac's trip. The horse thrives at five furlongs on stiff, quick ground — conditions where he has won twice from eleven races. Most recently, on 15 June 2025 at Hamilton Park, Eaves rode him to victory and afterwards spoke about how the short stiff track really suited him, calling him a yard favourite. That win came after what looked like a solid run, though Eaves admitted he'd been worried about the ground, noting that Bergerac typically performs best on faster surfaces. This summer he showed he can still compete at the top level: a Class 2 win at Newcastle in June 2024 came after leading for a long way from an awkward draw. But he hasn't won in his last six runs, and at eight years old, he's past his peak. He remains active and raced just a day ago, so there's clearly life in him yet — but these days he's more likely to pick up a place than add to that tally of six career wins.
