The recent run of form offers a mixed picture. A fourth place last time out showed Benzine competing respectably, and that second-place finish a few races back is the clearest sign yet that the talent to trouble the winner's enclosure is genuinely there. The 9th and 14th place finishes in between, however, are a reminder that consistency has been the missing piece throughout this career.
Shane Fitzgerald has been the regular partner in the saddle, riding Benzine in 9 of those 22 races without managing to get the horse over the line once. That is a long partnership to have without a shared win, and at some point the yard will have to decide whether a change of jockey might unlock something that the current combination has not been able to find. Benzine raced just yesterday, so the team clearly has no intention of stepping back — this is a horse still being given every opportunity to break its duck.
