Carlisle is a track that rewards horses who handle an undulating, stiff finish, and Benmore got the job done there just four weeks ago. Whether that course suits its particular style or whether it will travel well to other tracks is one of the interesting questions ahead — but right now, it arrives at its next race on the back of a win, and that always counts for something.
The trainer behind this early promise is L J Morgan, based at Waltham on the Wolds in Leicestershire. The yard has sent out 14 winners already this season, which tells you this is not a small operation finding its way — Morgan's team clearly knows how to have a horse ready to win. Benmore raced just a day ago, meaning it is right in the thick of things at the moment, and the fact that the yard is keeping it busy suggests they like what they are seeing.
Two races is a small sample, of course, and it would be unwise to read too much into it. But a horse that wins on its second attempt, trained by a yard in decent form, and still apparently fresh enough to keep running — that is a combination worth keeping an eye on as the season develops.
