Trainer Gemma Tutty, based at Osmotherley in North Yorkshire, reported that Bella Lucia was working well at home before her latest run at Beverley, where she finished third, beaten by just over two lengths. That's the kind of narrow defeat that can be encouraging — it means the horse is competitive at that level and close enough to winning that a small improvement or a bit of luck in the race could make the difference. Tutty's yard has sent out twenty winners this season, so there's clearly a team that knows how to train young horses to perform. The challenge for Bella Lucia now is to string together some wins and settle into a pattern, rather than the stop-start form she's shown so far.
