The partnership with jockey T Joseph Kelly has been the most consistent thing about Beaus Candle's career, and even that tells the same story. The pair have raced together eight times and have not won once. Eight races is a meaningful sample — enough to say with some confidence that this combination has yet to find the right day, the right race, or perhaps the right conditions to unlock whatever potential the yard believes is there.
What makes the situation stranger still is the lengthy absence from the track. Beaus Candle has not raced for roughly 20 months — around 625 days — which is a long time out for any horse, let alone one still searching for a first win. A break that long can mean many things: injury, a change in plan, or simply waiting for the right opportunity. The trainer, Declan Queally, is based in Cappagh, County Waterford, and his yard has clearly been in decent health this season, sending out 29 winners. That suggests the operation knows how to get horses into the winner's enclosure — just not this one, at least not yet.
Whether Beaus Candle returns to racing at all remains to be seen. A nine-year-old with a blank record returning from nearly two years off the track would need to show something significant to suggest the story has a different ending to write.
