Beachcomber

The highlight of the CV is a Class 2 win at Huntingdon in January 2024 — one of the better races in Britain outside the very top tier, and proof that Beachcomber is not simply filling out the bottom of fields. Winning at that level takes real ability, and it puts a ceiling on the horse that is higher than most in its company. Its first win came at Chepstow in February 2023, and since then it has operated mainly in Class 3 races, winning 1 from 7 at that level — roughly 1 in 7, which is modest but honest work at a competitive grade.

The tricky bit is the timing. Beachcomber's last win came at Kempton Park on 27 December 2024 — now 15 months ago — and it has not won in its last 6 races. Recent form reads 2-–-3-5-–-–, which tells a story of occasional promise mixed with blanks. A second and a third in there show the ability has not entirely vanished, but the wins have dried up. For an 8-year-old, that can just be the shape of a career settling into its groove rather than any cause for alarm.

The horse is trained by Jonjo O'Neill and A.J. O'Neill at their Cheltenham yard, which has sent out 52 winners this season — a busy, productive operation that clearly knows how to get horses running well. Jonjo O'Neill Jr rides Beachcomber most often, partnering the horse in 12 of its 22 races for 1 win together — about 1 in 12, which is below what you would hope for from a regular combination. It raced just one day ago, so it is very much an active runner with more chapters still to write.
