Basilette

The seven-year-old is trained by Seamus Mullins at his yard in Wilsford-Cum-Lake in Wiltshire, a small operation that has still managed to send out 10 winners this season. Mullins has spoken openly about what Basilette is: a summer horse who comes alive when the ground is fast and dry. She spent the winter on a break, and the plan heading into the warmer months was to wait for the right conditions and then mix Flat racing with hurdling. That patient, unhurried approach appears to be working. She raced just yesterday and has won twice in her last six outings — the most recent of those victories coming at Stratford on 12 July, this very week.

Distance matters too. Basilette's four wins over two miles or further — 4 from 13 races at that trip, a win rate of just over 30% — tell you she genuinely needs a test. She is not a horse who sprints and burns; she stays and grinds, and on fast ground over a long trip at a track she knows, she becomes a genuinely difficult problem for rivals to solve. Her most regular jockey, George Downing, has ridden her 11 times and won once together, which suggests their partnership is still finding its rhythm — or simply that Basilette tends to save her best for the days when everything else lines up just right.

She mainly runs in Class 5 races, which are towards the lower end of the sport's levels, and that is where she has made her mark — winning 3 from 12 at that grade, or 1 in every 4. That is a tidy record. Basilette is not a headline horse, but she is exactly the kind of consistent, course-savvy competitor that makes summer racing genuinely fun to follow.
