What makes this streak even more striking is where it started. Since then, the horse has been almost unbeatable, winning 5 of its last 6 races and finishing fourth in the only one that got away. But five on the bounce at this stage of a career is the kind of form that makes people sit up.

Training this purple patch is J J O'Shea, based out of Nantwich in Cheshire. It's a yard that has sent out 8 winners this season already, and Barton Snow has clearly been a significant part of that tally. What is harder to explain, and what will raise an eyebrow among those who follow the horse, is the record with regular rider Miss M M McElligott. She has partnered Barton Snow 10 times without a win together — 0 from 10. All five career victories have apparently come with someone else in the saddle. That is an unusual and intriguing footnote to what is otherwise a straightforward success story.

Cheltenham is the most famous and demanding jumps track in Britain, the sort of place where horses with pretensions to quality come unstuck. Winning there is never routine. The fact that Barton Snow's current streak ends — or rather, most recently peaked — at Cheltenham gives the whole run a gloss that a victory at a smaller track simply wouldn't. At nine years old, with five wins from 15 career races and the momentum of a horse that simply will not stop, Barton Snow is one of those stories that racing occasionally throws up: the late bloomer who finally found their level and decided, for now at least, that nobody was going to beat them.
