The recent form reads 9-5-8-8-7-5, which tells its own story. The fives suggest there are horses it can beat on a given day, but the eights and nines indicate it is regularly finishing near the back of the field. It raced just yesterday, so this is a horse very much in active service and still being campaigned by Colin Bowe's yard in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.
Bowe's operation has sent out two winners this season, which is a modest return but proof the yard can find the right spots for the right horses. The puzzle is that Philip Donovan, who has ridden Barely Made It in five of its nine races, has not been able to find a way to get it competitive — that partnership has produced zero wins from five attempts together.
What keeps this interesting, in a strange way, is that someone keeps running this horse. At nine years old, with a blank record, Barely Made It is either waiting for a race that truly suits it, or it is one of those horses that simply enjoys the day out. Racing has plenty of both.
