That solitary win came at Kilbeggan in April 2022, and it has not been back to the winner's enclosure since. That is now 49 months without winning — nearly four years — and its last six races have produced nothing to shout about. Trainer Henry de Bromhead, one of Ireland's most respected handlers, was candid after that Kilbeggan success, admitting the horse had not developed quite as expected over hurdles and that switching to chasing — racing over the larger fences — was the hope for unlocking something better. At the time, it looked like a turning point. It hasn't quite worked out that way.

What makes Baptism Of Fire's story worth understanding is the gap between expectation and reality that de Bromhead's own words hint at. Earlier in the horse's career, the trainer spoke warmly about its staying potential after a run at Punchestown, one of Ireland's most celebrated tracks. There was real optimism there — a sense this was a horse with a future. At 11, that future is now very much the present, and the results at Class 4 level, one of the more accessible tiers of racing, have not delivered a single win from three attempts at that grade.

Still racing as of yesterday, Baptism Of Fire clearly retains the soundness and enthusiasm to keep competing, which at 11 is no small thing in itself. Whether a winner's return is in the cards is harder to say — the evidence of the past four years suggests it will take something to go very right on the right day.
