Her recent form makes for difficult reading too. Looking at her last six races, her best finish was fourth, and she has twice finished outside the top ten, including a 12th and a 16th. There is no obvious upward curve here, which means the yard — sorry, the team around her — will need to find exactly the right race at the right moment if she is to break that duck.
She comes into her next run off a 73-day break, which is worth noting. Short breaks like that can sometimes mean a horse returns freshened up and sharper, but they can equally mean very little. Trained by Eoin Doyle out of Mooncoin in County Kilkenny, she is part of a small yard that has managed two winners this season — so when Doyle does get one to the track in form, he clearly knows what he is doing. Whether Ballinearla Girl can become winner number three for the stable remains to be seen.
At seven years old, she is not a youngster still learning the ropes. She is an experienced mare who knows her job — the question is simply whether a winnable opportunity comes along before her career winds down.
