Seamus Mullins trains him out of Wilsford-Cum-Lake in Wiltshire, a yard that has sent out 10 winners already this season. Mullins has used Balgowan cleverly, mixing Flat racing with hurdles, and it was on the Flat that the horse first got his head in front — at Southwell in April 2025. From there he placed several more times on the level, showing the kind of dependable consistency that keeps a horse in work and its trainer interested.

The most recent win came at Lingfield Park at the end of April 2026, just two months ago, and it was a performance worth noting. Jockey Ashley Lewis, speaking to Sky Sports Racing afterwards, explained that Balgowan had drawn a favourable starting position and the pace developed early — exactly the kind of race that suits him. When the gap appeared, Lewis said, the horse took him there without being asked. That is the language of a horse who, on the right day, has genuine ability rather than just stubbornness.

On normal ground Balgowan wins 2 from 12 — roughly 1 in every 6 — which is a meaningful improvement on his overall ratio and suggests that wet or very dry conditions genuinely hurt him. He also shows a decent record over longer trips of two miles or more: 1 win from 6 races at that distance, again around 1 in 6. Regular partner George Downing has ridden him 10 times for 1 win, a 10% win rate that outpaces his career average. His recent form reads 2-2-1-3-4-7 going back six races, with that middle figure a win — so he has been running into form rather than out of it. He raced just yesterday, which confirms he is firmly in his season. For a horse who operates at Class 6, the lowest tier of British racing, Balgowan does his job honestly and, increasingly, rather well.
