Back The West

The recent form makes for sobering reading. In its last six races, the best finishing position recorded is fifth, with a ninth-place finish appearing twice in that stretch. There is no upward curve here, no hint of a horse rediscovering something. What you are looking at is a consistent also-ran doing what it has always done.

Jockey Gavin Brouder has had five chances to unlock something in this horse and has not managed a win from any of them. That is not necessarily a criticism of either party — some combinations simply never click, and some horses, for whatever reason, just do not win races. Back The West raced just one day ago, so it is very much still active, still turning up, still finishing somewhere in the pack.

There is a kind of stubborn longevity to a horse like this that deserves a moment's acknowledgement. Reaching eleven and still racing means it has stayed sound and willing enough to keep competing long after many horses have retired. It will likely never win a race. But it keeps showing up, and in its own modest way, that counts for something.
