That second place last time out, just one day ago, is the closest it has come. Strip out the one rough day when it finished tenth, and this is a horse that has been remarkably consistent, threading through traffic and finding the frame nearly every time. Consistent placers like this can be frustrating to follow, but they can also be one small improvement away from breaking through.

The trainer is Olly Murphy, who operates out of Wilmcote in Warwickshire and has had a strong season — 138 winners sent out, which for context is the kind of output that marks a yard firing on all cylinders. Murphy is known for placing his horses well and getting the best out of them, so the fact that Atlantic City keeps coming close rather than winning is unlikely to be a training puzzle. More likely, the right opportunity simply hasn't arrived yet. When yards are running this hot, patience with a nearly-horse tends to get rewarded eventually.

Atlantic City is not a horse making up the numbers. It is a horse in decent form, trained by someone having a very good season, that ran just yesterday and came second. The question is not whether it can compete — it clearly can. The question is whether it can finally hold on when it matters. Sooner or later, a horse this consistently placed tends to find a race where everything clicks. When it does, nobody who has been watching will be surprised.
