Athena's Dream

The partnership with jockey James Best has now stretched to five races together without finding the winner's enclosure, which is starting to raise questions. That said, the combination has at least been placing, and consistency at this level can sometimes be the precursor to a breakthrough. It is worth watching whether the team persists with that pairing or decides a change of rider might unlock something different.

Trainer Harriet Dickin operates a small yard in Midford, Somerset, and has sent out three winners so far this season. That is a modest but respectable return, and it tells you this is not a stable firing on all cylinders — every win matters, and finding one for Athena's Dream would be meaningful. Dickin's horses tend to compete at Class 4, which sits in the middle tier of British racing — not the glamour end, but absolutely not a soft touch either. Three races at that level without a win is a challenge, though second and third place finishes hint that the gap between Athena's Dream and the winners is not enormous.

At four years old, she is young enough that improvement is genuinely plausible. The trajectory over her last six races — going from finishing sixth and seventh to placing second and third — is the kind of upward curve that keeps the yard patient. A horse that is getting worse is a concern; a horse that is getting better is a project. Athena's Dream looks very much like the latter, and given how recently she raced, the next opportunity may not be far away.
