Compare that to the overall record and it becomes clear this is a horse that needs a bit of distance to show its best. Too short and it just does not fire in the same way.

The recent run of form reads 6-6-1-7-2-3, which, working backwards from most recent, paints a picture of a horse that had a purple patch and has been finding things tougher since. That win and the placed efforts around it suggested real progress; the two sixths are a reminder that it remains a work in progress. That is actually a solid return at its level.

The trainer is Richard Hannon, based in Wiltshire, and his yard has sent out 113 winners this season alone. That is a serious operation — a conveyor belt of horses who know how to win — and the fact that Assaranca is part of that string suggests there is belief in the horse's ability. Hannon's yard does not tend to waste time on horses who have nothing to offer. The challenge now is recapturing the form that produced that Nottingham win six months ago and building on it as the season develops.
