Over that range, Ask A Sainte has won 1 from 6 races, a rate of roughly 1 in 6 — noticeably better than its overall record, and a useful pointer for anyone trying to work out when to take notice.

The horse is trained by Olly Murphy at Wilmcote in Warwickshire, and that in itself is worth paying attention to. Murphy's yard has sent out 146 winners already this season — that is a serious operation, the kind of stable that knows exactly what it is doing with each horse it runs. When a yard of that size and quality keeps running a horse, it usually means they believe there is more to come. Ask A Sainte raced just one day ago, so this is a horse very much in the middle of its campaign, fit and active.

The Uttoxeter win six weeks ago snapped what had been a frustrating sequence, and the most recent run — a second place — suggests that momentum has not faded. For a horse still finding its level, that combination of a first win banked and a place finish to follow is exactly the kind of form that suggests Ask A Sainte is running into a decent patch. Whether it can build on it is the question, but right now there is more reason to be interested than there has been for a while.
