Ascending Star

What's worth noting is that Ascending Star has not been idle. The horse has raced in each of the last six outings and found the placings regularly, finishing third, third, third, first, third, and third in that sequence. That string of third-place finishes either side of the win suggests a horse operating at a reasonably consistent level, competitive enough to be in the frame but struggling to find that extra gear needed to win races. There is no dramatic collapse in form, but there is also no sign of improvement since that May victory at Lingfield.

The horse is trained by Owen Burrows at Lambourn, a yard that has been in fine fettle this season with 32 winners already recorded. Burrows clearly has the infrastructure and expertise to develop young talent, and with Ascending Star still only three years old, there is time for the penny to drop. The challenge now is whether the horse can rediscover the winning form it showed once before, or whether that single victory will prove to be the highlight of its racing life. For a young horse competing regularly, one win from six races is not a disaster — but it is not yet a story of success either.
