Arklow Lad

The career really started to take shape from October 2025, when Arklow Lad broke through for that first win at Bellewstown. Since then the horse has kept knocking on the door, and the recent form makes for exciting reading: two wins from the last six races, with a fifth and a third sandwiched in between. That kind of sequence — winning, placing, winning again — is exactly what you want to see from a young horse still finding its feet at this level. Crucially, the most recent of those wins came just this week at Epsom Downs, one of the most famous and demanding racecourses in the world. Epsom is the home of the Derby, a track with a sharp downhill bend and a famously tricky camber that catches plenty of horses out. Winning there is never routine, and doing it at four years old suggests a horse with a bit of something about it.

Behind the scenes, Arklow Lad is trained by Michael Appleby at his yard in Oakham, Rutland — an operation in serious health this season, having sent out 71 winners already. A stable firing at that rate is one where horses are arriving at the track ready to run, and Arklow Lad clearly fits that picture. In the saddle, Declan McDonogh has been the go-to jockey for this horse, partnering it five times for one win together — a 20% win rate, or 1 in every 5 rides. That is a solid return, and the familiarity between horse and rider often matters more than the bare numbers suggest.

With the ink barely dry on that Epsom victory and another race just yesterday, Arklow Lad is a horse very much in the middle of its story right now.
