What really defines Argento Boy, though, is its relationship with the weather. On very wet, muddy ground, this horse has won 2 of just 3 races — a 67% win rate, or two in every three outings. That is the kind of statistic that makes trainers watch the forecast obsessively. When the ground is soft and the mud is flying, Argento Boy becomes a different animal. Its course record at Punchestown also stands out: 2 wins from 6 races at the same venue suggests a genuine affinity with the track, rather than a fluke.

The one area where the record falls short is at the very top level. Argento Boy has run three times in the highest-grade races in Britain and Ireland and has yet to win any of them. That is not a disgrace — those races attract the very best horses in training — but it is a hurdle still to clear.
