The recent form makes for fascinating reading. Going back through the last six races — most recent first — the sequence reads 12, 10, 1, 2, 2, 4. That middle stretch is remarkable: a win sandwiched between two runner-up finishes suggests Arcland hit a purple patch where everything was clicking. The drop back to 10th and 12th in the two most recent outings is a comedown, but the horse raced just one day ago, which means this story is still very much live.

Darragh O'Keeffe has been the regular partner, riding Arcland in 8 of those 26 races without a win together. That's not necessarily a damning statistic — plenty of horses win with one jockey and run well with another — but it does mean the two victories came with someone else in the saddle, which is a detail worth noting.

Trainer Gavin Cromwell operates out of Navan in County Meath and has had a strong season, sending out 98 winners. A yard producing that kind of volume knows what it's doing, and the fact that Arcland managed to win twice this season — including at the trainer's local track — suggests Cromwell found the right opportunities when the horse was in form. Whether there's another moment like September's Downpatrick win still to come is the open question hanging over Arcland's profile. At ten, the clock is ticking, but this is a horse that has already proved it can surprise people.
