A win at Navan in June was followed by a second place, a fifth, and then another victory at Killarney just this week — the horse raced just one day ago and is bang in form. Winning 2 of its last 6 races is a dramatic improvement on anything that came before it, and at 10 years old, that kind of late-career purple patch is genuinely rare.

One pattern that stands out is how well Arcland goes on normal ground — 2 wins from 6 races in those conditions, meaning it wins 1 in every 3 times the track is riding as expected. That is a remarkable ratio for any horse, let alone one whose overall record is more modest. When the ground is right, something clicks.

The one puzzle in the picture is the partnership with jockey Darragh O'Keeffe. The two have been paired together 8 times without a win — a blank record that stands in sharp contrast to what the horse has managed with others aboard. Neither of those recent victories came with O'Keeffe in the saddle, which is the kind of detail worth noting if you are trying to understand when Arcland is likely to go well.

Cromwell's yard is in exceptional shape regardless — 96 winners already this season is the output of an operation firing on all cylinders. Arcland may not be the stable star, but it has just reminded everyone that it still has something to offer. At an age when most racehorses have long since been retired, it is winning at Killarney in July. That alone earns a second look.
