Since then, Arch Empire has gone six races without winning, though the recent form figures of 9-4-3-2-4-3 show a horse that has been knocking on the door rather than falling apart. A second and two thirds in that run suggest it is racing consistently enough — it just hasn't been able to close the deal. Whether that is a matter of confidence, class, or simply needing the right race to fall its way is the question worth watching.

The partnership with Jack Kennedy is one of the more curious threads in this story. Kennedy is one of the most respected jump jockeys in Ireland, yet in five rides together, Arch Empire has not given him a single winner. That is a small sample, but it is still a streak worth noting. Sometimes certain horses and certain riders just don't quite click, and it will be interesting to see whether that combination gets another chance or whether the team at Gordon Elliott's yard in Longwood try a different approach on the return.

Elliott's operation is in typically formidable shape this season, having sent out 209 winners — a number that puts them among the most powerful yards in the sport. The fact that a horse like Arch Empire has been kept in training and is now returning from a four-month break suggests the yard believes there is a race to be won somewhere. Whether Arch Empire can find it is another matter, but with Elliott behind it, at least it will have every opportunity to try.
