What makes Apercu genuinely interesting is how selective her wins are. Put her on soft ground and she becomes a different prospect entirely: two wins from just three races on wet or muddy going gives her a win rate of 67 per cent, which is remarkable by any standard. It is the kind of statistic that makes a trainer reach for the rain forecast. Her jockey W J Lee clearly knows her strengths—he has ridden her in 11 races and won four of them (a 36 per cent win rate together), suggesting a real partnership. At The Curragh, where she has raced nine times, she has found the winner's enclosure twice, most recently back in May 2025, though that victory came 17 months ago. Her trainer A Oliver, based at Caledon in County Tyrone, clearly rates her: the yard has sent out 18 winners already this season, and Oliver was keen on stepping her up in distance at one point, though he later brought her back to shorter trips after a disappointing sixth-place finish at a mile and a half, reasoning that she simply did not get the distance.

She raced just a day ago and has not won in her last six outings, which might suggest she is in a lean patch. But with soft ground coming and Lee back in the saddle, there is every reason to think Apercu will be dangerous again soon. A tough mare with a clear preference for wet ground and a jockey who reads her brilliantly—that is a formula worth remembering.
