That said, context matters here. Two-year-olds are essentially teenagers learning a completely new skill, and three races is a very small sample to judge any young horse. The fact that his best finish — a fourth — came in one of his runs suggests there is at least a degree of ability to build on, even if the wins haven't followed yet.
What does give reason for optimism is the yard behind him. Rebecca Menzies, training out of Morden in County Durham, has sent out 36 winners already this season — a strong output that puts her among the more productive trainers in the north of England. A trainer hitting those kinds of numbers clearly knows how to place and prepare a horse, and Aodhan is very much a work in progress that a yard of that quality is well placed to develop.
