The story really starts at Windsor on 30 June 2025, where Antipodes picked up its first career win in one of the top races on offer — a Class 2, which sits near the summit of British racing. That win was the beginning of something, though nobody quite knew it at the time. Varian noted after the season that the horse had improved with every run but then picked up an injury, meaning winter and a long wait were the price of that promising autumn. When he came back, the team didn't rush him — he wasn't ready until May — and the plan was straightforward: start back over a mile and see how far this horse could go.

The answer, so far, is further than perhaps even Varian expected. Antipodes has won three on the bounce, the most recent coming at York just this week — a result that feels significant. York is one of the grandest tracks in Britain, a place that sorts out the genuine horses from the ones flattered by easier company. Winning there continues a sequence that is hard to argue with.

Behind all of this sits one of the most productive yards in the country right now. Varian's Newmarket operation has sent out 87 winners already this season — a volume that speaks to a yard firing on all cylinders, with the staff, the horses, and the judgement all working in concert. When a trainer says a horse "has potential and could be progressive," that is often the kind of cautious optimism that goes nowhere. With Antipodes, those words are starting to look like an understatement.
