Ambitious Fellow

His record tells a story of a horse caught between levels. He was successful enough early in his career, with his breakthrough coming at Fairyhouse in October 2021, but has found wins harder to come by as the years have gone on. The real insight into his character comes from his partnership with jockey Sam Ewing: they have won together three times from ten races, a 30 percent win rate that is significantly better than his overall record. Ground conditions matter enormously to this horse. He has won two races from five on slightly soft ground — a 40 percent win rate — suggesting that when the turf is a little yielding, he is at his best. His trainer, Peter Fahey, has said as much explicitly: after his Galway win, Fahey noted he had been worried about the ground but it worked out, and more recently suggested that once conditions soften, the horse would be given a break. This is a horse who wants the ground to play to his strengths rather than against them. At a yard that has sent out 14 winners this season, Ambitious Fellow remains a work in progress — experienced enough to win again, but perhaps better suited to specific conditions than he is to the demands of consistent racing at the highest level.
