His first win came at Fairyhouse in October 2021, and his most recent at Galway in August 2023 — a victory that felt like a comeback in itself. Fahey admitted afterwards that the horse had lost his form and had a physical issue following a run at Limerick, so getting him back in the winner's enclosure clearly meant something to the yard. The Galway win also highlighted one of Ambitious Fellow's key traits: he genuinely thrives on slightly soft ground, winning 2 of his 4 races on that surface — a remarkable 50% win rate that dwarfs his overall figures.

Since that Galway success, though, the wins have dried up. He hasn't won in his last 6 races, and his recent form — a handful of near-misses and mid-field finishes — suggests he's been finding life competitive. Fahey pulled him out of a run at Wetherby after concluding the ground was simply too wet, which shows the team are selective about when and where they run him rather than chasing entries for their own sake. The best version of Ambitious Fellow needs conditions just right.

When the partnership works, it is often Sam Ewing in the saddle. The two have won 3 times from 10 races together — a win rate of 30%, or almost 1 in every 3 rides — which is a notably strong record and suggests a real understanding between horse and jockey. Fahey has spoken about targeting a valuable three-mile race at Navan and eventually sending him over fences, which would represent a new chapter for a horse with plenty of experience but perhaps more still to give.
