The early chapters were genuinely exciting. Ambiente Friendly ran in both the English and Irish Derby, two of the most prestigious Flat races in the calendar, and by his trainer's own account he produced two massive performances. At the Curragh for the Irish Derby, he travelled smoothly through the race before getting outstayed in the final furlong by horses his trainer described as "very good." That is not a horse being found out — that is a horse running right at the limit of the best competition in Europe. It suggested a serious talent.
What followed was harder to watch. He simply stopped reproducing that form. James Owen, who trains him out of a yard in Newmarket that has sent out 204 winners this season, was candid about it: the horse went off the rails, and getting him back has been a matter of small steps rather than dramatic leaps. The decision was made to geld him and, crucially, to try him over hurdles — switching codes entirely and pointing him at jump racing as well as the Flat. He schools well and jumps fast, Owen noted, so the plan was not a desperate throw of the dice but a considered one.
It paid off. In December 2025, Ambiente Friendly won at Huntingdon, six months ago now, and the relief in Owen's post-race words was unmistakable. The horse was enjoying himself again. That matters more than it sounds — a talented horse that has lost its enthusiasm is very hard to train, and seeing him respond was a significant moment. His best performances come at a mile and three furlongs to a mile and a half, winning 1 of 3 races at that trip, which suggests the stamina his team have always believed in is real.
He has run in Class 1 company — the top tier — for 10 of his 18 races, winning once at that level, a 10% win rate or 1 in every 10. That single Class 1 victory came at Lingfield in May 2024. With a race just yesterday, Ambiente Friendly is still very much a work in progress, but he is a horse with a story worth following.
