The highlights are genuinely striking. A first win came at Leicester in September 2023, but the races that really put Ambiente Friendly on the map were two runs in the English and Irish Derby — the biggest Flat races for horses of his generation. He didn't win either, but competing at that level at all marks him out as a horse with serious natural ability. Trainer James Owen has been candid about what happened next: after those two big moments, the horse simply lost his way. The form collapsed, and working out how to get the best out of him became the yard's main challenge.
The solution Owen landed on was switching codes — moving Ambiente Friendly from Flat racing to racing over hurdles, which is a significant change in discipline. He gelded the horse, pointed him at Huntingdon in December 2025, and it clicked. That win, six months ago now, was described by Owen as a small but meaningful step forward, the horse "enjoying himself" again after a difficult spell. The plan, if he keeps progressing over hurdles, is to return to the Flat as well — unusual, but possible for a horse this young. Owen has been explicit that he still believes Ambiente Friendly stays well over longer distances, specifically the mile-and-three to mile-and-four range, where he wins 1 in every 4 races — a noticeably better record than his overall rate.
What makes this interesting is the scale of the yard behind him. James Owen's operation in Newmarket has sent out 205 winners this season — that is not a small trainer throwing things at the wall. When a yard that productive commits time and energy to rehabilitating a horse this way, it tells you something about what they think is still in there. Ambiente Friendly has placed seven times in 19 races, meaning he has been competitive far more often than his three wins suggest. He raced just yesterday and is clearly in active training. The question now is whether the horse that jumped hurdles so well at Huntingdon can carry that confidence forward — and whether the Flat form that impressed at Derby level is truly gone, or just waiting.
