Am Still Here

The horse runs for Lizzie Quinlan's yard at Bolton Mill in Cumbria and is most often partnered by Sean Quinlan. The two have been together for nearly all his races — 15 starts without a win between them. That kind of pairing, unchanging for so long without reward, speaks to a certain loyalty in racing: the yard willing to keep showing up even when the results do not come. Quinlan's yard has sent out four winners this season, so there is clearly competence in the operation, but Am Still Here simply has not been the beneficiary of a breakthrough moment.

His recent form shows a horse grinding away without improvement: two thirds, two seconds, a third, and a fifth across his last six races. There is nothing in that sequence to suggest a win is imminent. Class 5 racing — the lowest grade at which he regularly competes — has yielded nothing in 11 attempts. Seven years in and still waiting for that first victory is a hard reality, but for now, the horse remains active and willing. Sometimes racing is not about triumph. Sometimes it is simply about showing up.
