Alphecca

The wins came in quick succession last October — first at Killarney on the 6th, then at Naas six days later — but nothing since has matched that early flourish. A year without a victory is a long silence for a horse with genuine ability. That said, there is real form in those placings, and the recent second suggests Alphecca is still competitive at the right level.

The horse runs best over middle distances between seven furlongs and a mile, winning one of three races at that trip. Paired with Gary Carroll, Alphecca has a noticeably better record: two wins from seven races together, a win rate of roughly 29 percent, compared to 22 percent overall. That's a meaningful difference, the kind of thing worth noting when looking for patterns. Joseph G Murphy's yard at Fethard, Co Tipperary, has sent out 13 winners this season, so there is proven training strength here. Alphecca remains a horse in progress—nothing spectacular, but still young enough and capable enough to suggest that another winning run is not out of reach.
