She broke her duck at Pontefract back in early June with a winning race, and while that victory now sits two months in the rearview mirror, the fact that she has remained competitive since—picking up places regularly—suggests the win was not a flash in the pan. Alma Latina is trained by Ralph Beckett at Kimpton in Hampshire, a yard that has been firing on all cylinders this season with 107 winners already sent out. Beckett does not do flashy; he does solid, winning racing, and the consistency of his stable suggests Alma Latina is being handled by someone who knows how to get the best from a developing three-year-old.

With just one race under her belt in the last two months and still clearly active in the schedule, this horse is very much a work in progress. The challenge now will be converting those places—and there are plenty of them—into wins. She has shown she can do it once at Pontefract; the next step is doing it again.
