The recent form tells an interesting story. A seventh, then a third, then a second — read that backwards and you've got a horse that appears to be improving with each run, gradually closing in on the front of the field. Whether that trend continues is the question, but the direction of travel is at least pointing the right way.
What Alderman does have in his corner is one of the most powerful training operations in Britain. Richard Hannon, based at Herridge in Wiltshire, has sent out 115 winners already this season — that is a remarkable volume that puts the yard among the elite in the country. When a trainer is firing in winners at that rate, they tend to know when a horse is ready and when it needs more time. The fact that Alderman raced just one day ago suggests the team are keeping him busy, which can sometimes be a sign they see something to work with. Having a trainer of Hannon's calibre in your corner doesn't guarantee anything, but it's a better starting point than most horses get.
At this stage, Alderman reads as a horse in progress — still learning, still developing, but surrounded by the right people to help him figure it out.
