Albasheer

The headline numbers: four wins from 28 races, a win rate of roughly 1 in every 7. That might not sound spectacular on its own, but context changes everything. All four of those wins came at Class 2 level — some of the most competitive races in Britain — and they arrived at three different tracks across a year-long purple patch that ran from August 2023 to July 2024. A first win at York in August 2023 was followed by back-to-back victories at Newcastle on New Year's Day 2024 and again in March, then a fourth at Ascot the following summer. Four times in under twelve months, Albasheer turned up at a serious venue and beat serious horses. That's a horse operating at a high level with genuine consistency, at least when things were clicking.

The partnership with jockey Hollie Doyle is central to the story. Of the 18 races they've run together, four have ended in victory — a win rate of 22%, or roughly 1 in every 4 to 5 rides. That's a notably better ratio than Albasheer's overall record, suggesting the combination suits the horse. When those two click, results tend to follow.

Ground matters too, and here the picture is simple: Albasheer likes it either normal or dry. On normal ground, two wins from nine races (22%). On fast, dry ground, two wins from eight (25%). Both are solid numbers. Wet or muddy conditions don't appear to bring out the best in this horse.

The tricky part is the current form. Six races without a win, with a recent sequence of 4-9-3-4-5-7 that shows flickers of ability — a third and a fourth — without quite delivering. Archie Watson's yard at Upper Lambourn has been in excellent shape this season, sending out 64 winners, so the support structure is there. Whether Albasheer, now eight years old, can find that 2023-24 form one more time is the open question. Last raced just ten days ago, the horse is active and in the mix. Patience might yet be rewarded.
