The horse performs noticeably better over shorter distances between 5 and 6½ furlongs, where it has won one of three races—a 33 percent win rate over that trip that stands out against its overall one in six record. That suggests there is a sweet spot for Agitator, and the trainer Oliver Cole, based at Whatcombe in Oxfordshire, will have noted that. Cole's yard has sent out eight winners this season, so the operation is producing results. The puzzle for the trainer now is consistency. Agitator won at Windsor four months ago but has managed only one place in the five races since, including a pair of efforts well down the field in its last two outings. For a 2-year-old still learning its trade, that kind of up-and-down form is not unusual, but it does mean Agitator has work to do to prove that May's victory was the start of something rather than a one-off.
