Aethelstan Gold is a two-year-old that has yet to find the winner's enclosure, but there is no need to write him off just yet. The horse made its debut just a day ago and finished third, which is a respectable start for a young animal stepping into a race for the first time.
Harry Charlton's yard at Beckhampton has had a strong season, sending out 38 winners, so the horse is in experienced hands. At this early stage of its career, a single run tells you almost nothing about what Aethelstan Gold might become—plenty of future stars have modest debuts. The next few races will reveal whether the horse has the speed and temperament to develop into something worthwhile.
