On the breeding side, Renaissance Rio is by Shaman out of a mare by Captain Rio. Shaman was a talented miler whose offspring tend to need a little time to find their feet, while Captain Rio horses often show a natural sharpness from an early age. Whether Renaissance Rio has inherited the patience of one or the zip of the other is the interesting question — and the only way to answer it is to actually watch it race.
The trainer is Michael Bell, whose Newmarket operation has been in fine form this season with 47 winners already on the board. That number matters because it tells you this is not a yard sending out horses in hope — Bell and his team know what they are doing, and when they decide a two-year-old is ready to debut, it usually means they have seen something at home that gives them confidence. Newmarket itself is one of the great training centres in British racing, a place where horses work on wide, well-kept gallops and arrive at the racecourse fit and well-prepared. Renaissance Rio could not really have a better start in life.
